Overview
Vietnam’s handicraft industry is entering a new phase of global growth, fueled by green consumption, rising e-commerce sales, and the advantages of free trade agreements (FTAs).
Experts believe these three forces are transforming how Vietnamese handicrafts reach the world — from handcrafted bamboo baskets to contemporary rattan furniture and eco-friendly décor.
1. Green Consumption: The Rise of Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Handicrafts
Global consumers are increasingly choosing sustainable products made from natural, renewable, and biodegradable materials.
In both the EU and U.S. markets, products crafted from bamboo, rattan, seagrass, water hyacinth, and recycled materials are in high demand.
“Green consumption gives Vietnam a strong competitive edge, especially for bamboo and rattan products,” said Tra Le, Market Development Director at Source of Asia, during the workshop “Accelerating Exports of Contemporary Lifestyle Products to Europe” held in Ho Chi Minh City.
With over 5,400 craft villages and about 3 million workers, Vietnam’s handicraft sector not only preserves traditional craftsmanship but also leads the shift toward sustainable production.
However, businesses must adapt to strict environmental regulations such as EU REACH and EUDR (anti-deforestation) to remain competitive in eco-conscious markets.
2. E-Commerce: Digital Channels Expanding Export Opportunities
Vietnamese handicraft exporters are rapidly embracing digital transformation.
Nearly 50% of businesses now sell products on international e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, and Etsy.
In 2024 alone, e-commerce sales in the handicraft sector grew 18%, allowing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to reach overseas buyers directly.
This digital approach is opening global opportunities for home décor, lifestyle accessories, and eco-living products made in Vietnam.
3. Free Trade Agreements: Lower Tariffs, Greater Market Access
Vietnam’s expanding network of free trade agreements, especially the EVFTA (EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement), is providing strong momentum for export growth.
These agreements reduce tariffs and simplify customs procedures, making it easier for Vietnamese handicrafts to enter European markets.
The EU is now Vietnam’s second-largest export market after the U.S., with significant potential in furniture, handicrafts, and fashion.
In 2024, trade between Vietnam and France reached $5.42 billion, up 12.9% year-over-year.
According to Statista, the EU furniture market will reach $239.07 billion in 2025, with living room furniture alone valued at $62.43 billion — offering vast opportunities for Vietnamese exporters of handcrafted décor and furniture.
Challenges and the Path Forward
Despite this positive outlook, Vietnam’s handicraft industry faces challenges:
-
Strong competition from China and India
-
Tight environmental and ethical regulations in EU markets
-
Limited brand development among small producers
Experts recommend that exporters:
-
Obtain international certifications like FSC, BSCI, SA8000, and ISO 14001
-
Use recycled or certified plantation wood and ensure traceability
-
Innovate with modern, space-saving designs that suit urban lifestyles
-
Build strong brand identities that merge cultural heritage with contemporary aesthetics, similar to Alessi (Italy) or Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
Conclusion
With the global focus on sustainability, digital trade, and fair partnerships, Vietnam’s handicraft industry is poised for continued success.
The combination of natural materials, skilled artisans, and favorable trade policies positions Vietnam as a leading supplier in the global lifestyle and home décor market.
Businesses that invest in green production, certified materials, and brand storytelling will play a vital role in bringing Vietnamese culture and craftsmanship to the world.
